What are we teaching our kids?
Have you ever thought about what we teach our kids in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School? What do they remember from our lessons? This week my sister and I are doing the lesson part of vacation Bible school. The story was on the washing of the disciples' feet. I was playing the part of Jesus, and was getting set for the passover scene. My sister took the kids around from door to door asking if they saw Jesus. Finally the last person (a baker) told the kids where Jesus was. Then I ate with the kids and told them about washing the disciples feet, and we allowed the kids to in love wash their leader's feet. When someone asked them what their story was about, they mentioned going from door to door asking where Jesus was and the baker telling them where Jesus was. That part of the story was in the teacher's manuel but NOT in the Bible. However the kids remembered it as though it was in the Bible. Another kid asked me if I was really Jesus. (Scary thing that we might be teaching them that). There are so many really Cool stories in the bible. Why do we feel we have to be exciting but adding to what is their. Kids can't diferentiate between the addlib and the real stuff. In the bible, a donkey really did talk, but how would that be different than a fun story where the donkey that Mary and Joseph rode on talking, which didn't happen. I think you have to be VERY careful when teaching kids, because they remember what you teach them. So it better be true. Current Mood: surprised |

SDG update
Last weekend, I attended the Soli Deo Gloria tournament which is always the hi-light of my year. This year we took a family team in which me, my two sisters and my mom quizzed together. It was neat that there were several family teams this year. Our team placed 3rd which is very common for us at that tournament. (We generally end up 3rd). The trip home was very interesting. We traveled home on Tuesday instead of Monday since we had to take the Belize team to the airport on Tuesday morning. They had a 6:30 am flight so we got them to the airport a little after 5. We had a rental car which we couldn't turn in until 7:30 (unless we wanted to put the key in the drop box). So my mom parked the rental car in the parking lot and kept the key in her pocket. My sisters and I parked my parent's 1994 mini-van. The brake light came on in the van when we were in the parking lot. Praise God that the problem happened in the parking lot and not on the road. We were concerned about the car because it is quite old. We called AAA and they came out to tow the car but couldn't take all of us to the garage. Praise God that we hadn't turned in the key to the rental car yet and we didn't have to have the car back until noon. (They charge by the day and we picked the car up at noon on Friday). Its neat how God works out the small details. I think when you have problems you can see that God is always there. |

Dad's good news
My dad got some good news last week. He just got his mystery novel published. He's been trying unsuccessfully for about 2.5 years. So it was pretty exciting that a publisher wrote him a contract. It should come out within the year. So watch for it: "The case of the Elusive Chauffer" Current Mood: excited |

Update from district finals
We just got back from district finals last weekend. It was nice. We picked our all-star teams. It was interesting because our JV group is considerably stronger than our varsity group. In fact our 5th quizzer on the JV team could womp on our top varsity quizzer. 3 of the JV quizzers had memorized the entire book of Acts. (All from one family). The varsity marathon though was very sad. We had 8 kids try out. Eventually 4 of them quizzed out and 3 errored out. Since the remaining kid on the seats had a negative score with no correct answers, we called the quiz and put the 6th quizzer from the JV marathon on the varsity team. My prediction is that the varsity team will be close to last and the JV team may win it all or at least give Maine and Virginia a run for their money. |

Publications
I just got another paper accepted for publication. This is my first solo- authored paper, so as you can imagine I am more than a little excited. It makes me feel good to know I can do research myself, and don't have to rely on my advisor. It also will look good in my pre-tenure review. Current Mood: excited |

Timing--Good or bad
How often do we say, "I got sick at the worst possible time." Many times it is at the worst possible time. I think though its important to remember when we get sick at the best possible time. This past Wednesday I came down with the stomach flu. On campus, we were celebrating the 150th anniversary of the school. All of my classes were cancelled anyways. So I had no guilt in calling in sick. I wish I hadn't gotten sick, however if it was going to happen, it couldn't have happened at a better time. I didn't have to try to teach while I was sick. It wasn't a tough decision as to whether to go to a party with the flu. (There was no way I could eat anyways). I could stay home and take it easy. Current Mood: sick |

Small World
This past week I experienced 2 very neat small world type events. 1. On the forth of July, me and my family (including my grandparents) went to the Free Methodist campground for a service followed by a chicken barbeque. The main speaker in the service was my grandpa's cousin's son-in-law. My grandpa's cousin was also there and she is 95 years old. 2. We just recently got a new pastor. We found out last Wednesday night that the pastor's wife was someone my sister and I knew as a kid. I had roomed with her older sister at NYC (Nazarene Youth Congress). And their family went to my grandparents church when they were on furlow. My sister has a postcard that she had written to her when she was 9 years old. And now she's my pastor's wife. I thought both of those events were neat. |

Car towed
Does anyone know the laws on towing cars? We were on vacation last week. When we got back, my sister's car had gotten towed. It was parked in the parking lot at our place. I guess when we were gone the landlord decided to pave the parking lot on Wednesday and they towed my sister's car because it was in the way of the pavers. It seems like we should have gotten notice that this was going to be done. It cost us $233 to get the car back. They called us on Wednesday at 8:30am and put a notice on our car on Wednesday at 9am and it got towed on Wednesday (I don't know what time). It seems like not that much notice even if we had been home which we weren't. Does anyone know the laws on this? Is it legal to tow a car that was parked in a lot designed for people renting that building? |

Maine quiz
We just got back from the Bible quiz retreat in Maine. It was a lot of fun. My team tied for 4th place. But the competition was really low-keyed. The emphasis was on praising God, Christian fellowship and fun. The quiz masters were really laid back and goofy. One quiz we quizzed on our foreheads. So instead of standing up to jump we would lift our heads from the bench. It was a nice relaxing atmosphere. It was also nice seeing many former quizzers back as leaders and officials. Finding God's will
Yesterday, my mom, brother and I were on our way to Potsdam for a Bible Quiz. We started getting lake effect snow around Syracuse and stayed in a motel. Today we were unsure which way to go. Should we continue, should we turn back? We were seeking God's will as we wanted to go the direction he wanted us to go. We ended up continuing on for a little ways and then turning around and coming home. We felt bad not going as we were going to be quizmastering and I'm sure people were counting on us. It was hard because we trusted God and yet we had to be making decisions as to which way to turn. How often we need to make those decisions unsure of the direction God was leading. We still wonder if we misheard God's voice to go or misheard God's voice to return home, or did God want us to be going part way and turning around. Maybe he wanted to teach us a lesson in faith and obedience. |

Evolution vs Intelligent Design
I just went to a talk on evolution vs. intelligent design and whether religion belongs in a science class. A Biology professor presented evolution and a philosophy professor presented intelligent design. I was surprised that even the intelligent design side didn't prove the existance of God but that God might exist. That life did not begin by chance. It was really interesting. From a statistics point of view (which is my field so that's how I tend to look at things) the data presented was that the chances of us coming into existance by chance was less than 1 in 1 billion. Those are astronomical odds. The defense to this was that this happened over a period of 3 million years so the odds are not as astronomical as one would think. I found it quite fascinating even though I agreed with less than 5% of what was presented. Its nice to know the truth. Genesis 1 tells us how life was created. |

You can lead a horse to water, but can you make him drink
Actually in this case, sometimes its hard to get them to the water. We have review sessions designed to help increase the passing rate in our elementary statistics course. We have also provided incentives to get the students to come. There have been 2 days when nobody has showed up. People can say all they want that the material is too hard and we aren't teaching right, but when nobody shows up, it wouldn't matter how we taught the material. They wouldn't be there to hear it. Therefore I doubt very highly if we will make a dent in the passing rate by holding the review sessions. |

new semester
I'm starting my second year as a professor. Things seem to be going well. I have smaller class sizes than last year so that makes for nice classroom interaction. I am course coordinator for a couple of classes so I have more responsibility than last year. We have a tutor for one of the classes and I will be coordinating the review sessions. We are hoping that the passing rate will increase by having the tutor. |

Vacation Bible School
This week we are having vacation Bible school at our church. We are teaching the kids to build charactor traits like Jesus. Last night we taught them the story of the birth of Jesus. We had the kids act out the story. Tonight is the story of Jesus growing up and when he went to the temple at the age of 12. The charactor trait tonight is obedience. |

Trip to Binghamton
This past week I took a trip to Binghamton to see some of my friends. I saw one of my friends successfully defend his dissertation and become a doctor. Its nice seeing him earn that title. I was also able to meet with my advisor and discuss my research. I was hoping that he had heard back about the paper that I had submitted, but not yet. Its a LONG process. I submitted the paper 6 months ago. Fun trip. I enjoyed myself and came back revived. Current Mood: happy |

Religion 103
Exciting news!!! My pastor asked about adjunct teaching at our University and they hired him to teach Intro to Christianity. He asked if he was to look at things from a historical point of view or a theology point of view and they said he could do either--even talk about salvation if he wanted to. He was to have a class of size 40. What a nice impact that he may have on our campus. Well all the religion courses have filled up and there are still several students that need to register so we they are going to increase the class sizes by 5 students. This will give him a greater impact for the LORD. Praise the LORD!!! He is definitely working. |

Baby Buggies
My dad and brother told me a neat story that they saw happen yesterday. They were working in the food pantry and a lady came and asked the people downstairs if they had any baby equipment. Strollers, buggies, high chairs etc. While that was happening someone pulled up and asked my dad and brother to help them unload a bunch of baby equipment that they wanted to donate to the daycare. God knew the request before it was asked and supplied the need. Isn't that neat. Current Mood: impressed |
